The individual health topics are the backbone of MedlinePlus. In 1998, MedlinePlus began with 22 health topics as a means of providing the public with accurate health information from trusted sources.

Currently, there are more than a thousand health topics in English and Spanish. MedlinePlus health topics are regularly reviewed, and links are updated daily. Health topics can be browsed using the A-Z index where topics are organized under five group categories and more granular topic groups.
