On November 7, 2000, NLM temporarily stopped adding fully indexed citations to PubMed and on January 16, 2001, the Library stopped the daily updating of PubMed with new publisher-supplied and in-process citations. These actions were taken to accommodate both NLM's internal maintenance cycle known as Year-End Processing (YEP) and the replacement of our system that manages the data entry, indexing, and quality control of journal citations. Although we expected these interruptions to last only through January 26, 2001, the updating of publisher-supplied, in-process and fully indexed citations to PubMed was delayed past this date.

On February 2, 2001, the MEDLINE data were reloaded into PubMed. This reload included MEDLINE citations through the end of the 2000 indexing year which were updated to reflect changes to 2001 MeSH. Also, the 2001 MeSH vocabulary was incorporated into PubMed's MeSH Browser and MeSH translation table.

On February 7, 2001, we resumed loading new citations into PubMed with a small number (approximately 2,000) of publisher-supplied citations. On February 13, 2001 we loaded another 11,000 publisher-supplied citations into PubMed. We loaded the remaining backlog of publisher-supplied citations and resumed our regular update schedule for these citations on February 15, 2001.

The newly indexed MEDLINE citations from the beginning of the 2001indexing year and the backlog of in-process citations will be added to PubMed soon and updates for these citations will resume according to the published update schedule.

The MEDLINE reload data were sent to licensees the week of February 5, 2001. The MEDLINE in-process citations and newly indexed citations since the beginning of the 2001 indexing year will be made available for licensees to ftp as soon as NLM has successfully added the data to PubMed. Licensees are reminded that NLM sends them e-mail notifications regarding data distribution issues and schedules. These notifications are also posted on NLM's Web site for licensees at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee.html.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as NLM navigates through this major reinvention initiative. This is the final leg of our migration from the old, mainframe MEDLINE computer applications to more modern information technology architecture. It has been a long journey and this most recent year-end cycle took longer than usual as we juggled transition issues. As NLM's own 2001 system has been delayed, users should expect similar delays in the delivery of products from other vendors as they make their own adjustments.
