og and honeybee were added to the organisms in LocusLink raising to fifteen the number of organisms for which gene indexing is performed by creating annotated links between MEDLINE citations and LocusLink records. Initially, there were five organisms--human, mouse, rat, fruit fly, and zebrafish. All organisms are listed below, along with the date each was added to LocusLink.

Between March 2002 and June 2004, more than 75,000 gene indexing links have been created by MEDLINE indexers. New links are now being created at the rate of 600 - 700 per week.
Plans are underway to replace LocusLink with a new database, Entrez Gene. One result will be a tremendous increase in the number of organisms for which gene indexing is performed, from fifteen organisms to nearly 1,600. More details about gene indexing using Entrez Gene will be available soon.
