Subheading Searching in PubMed

Subheading Searching in PubMed. NLM Technical Bulletin. 2004 May–Jun;(338):e1.

June 04, 2004 [posted]

[Editor's Note added March 11, 2005]

In addition to the two-letter abbreviations and the full spelling of subheadings, Entry Versions of subheadings (e.g., class for classification, stand for standards) were searchable in PubMed. As these Entry Versions may be the same as text words for unrelated concepts, their use can result in "unexpected" retrieval. In the near future we will discontinue Subheading Entry Versions as options for subheading searching. If an Entry Version is the same as the full spelling (e.g., methods), there is no effect by this change.

When using subheadings in searches (including stored searches), please use either the full, spelled-out version of a subheading or its two-letter abbreviation.
Example:

Do NOT use:
heart diseases/diag
Use:
heart diseases/di
or
heart diseases/diagnosis

For more information about using MeSH subheadings see PubMed's Help.
