Space Life Sciences Citations Added to PubMed® and the NLM Gateway

drop cap graphic of the letter A pproximately 7,200 space life sciences-related journal citations unique to the former SPACELINE database are now in MEDLINE and can be searched in PubMed. Additionally, approximately 900 space life sciences-related meeting abstracts from SPACELINE are now in the NLM Gateway. As NLM continues to reorganize its bibliographic databases, the migration of these specialized citations to MEDLINE and the Gateway provides users with continued access to space life sciences-related information. Please see the May-June 2000 NLM Technical Bulletin article Organization of National Library of Medicine Bibliographic Databases for more information on the reorganization of bibliographic databases. We expect to convert journal citations unique to the former HISTLINE, BIOTHICSLINE, and POPLINE databases to MEDLINE soon. Announcements of these future conversions will be made in forthcoming articles.

For the space life sciences journal citations, there are additional data fields that are not yet searchable in PubMed (e.g., Space Flight/Mission). We will announce when the additional data fields are searchable in a forthcoming article. For now, these fields are included in the PubMed XML display format.

For information on the space life sciences-related meeting abstracts please see the Technical Notes in this issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin.

NLM encourages those of you who have not yet tried the "one-stop-shopping" offered by the NLM Gateway to give it a try. The Gateway should be used to search for meeting abstracts as it is NLM's repository for these records. See the Gateway Overview, available from the Gateway sidebar, for more information.

Note to PubMed Cubby Users: As they are new to MEDLINE and PubMed, the 7,200 space life sciences-related journal citations may be pulled by a Cubby stored search using terms in this subject area.
