The Structural Informatics Group (SIG) at the University of Washington developed and maintains the Foundational Model of Anatomy ontology (FMA). The FMA project is an information resource integrated in SIG's Anatomy Information System.
FMA is a computer-based knowledge source for biomedical informatics. It provides classes and relationships that represent the phenotypic structure of the human body. Its format is both human and machine readable.
FMA is open-source and available for general use.
The Metathesaurus provides a relational representation of the FMA owl file. Classes, object properties and annotations are included.
FMA is a resource for developing the anatomy content of applications for education, clinical medicine, electronic health records, biomedical research and all areas of health care delivery and management. It is not an end-user application.
