Authority
The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) and the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) produce the NCPDP Terminology.

Purpose
The NCPDP Terminology supports the transfer of data related to medications, supplies, and services within the healthcare system.

Description
The terminology files support (1) messages regarding new prescriptions, prescription changes, refill requests, prescription fill status notification, prescription cancellation, medication history, and transactions for long term care environments and (2) the electronic communication of claims and other transactions between pharmacy providers, insurance carriers, third party administrators and other responsible parties.

Audience
Developers and users of healthcare system data and its communication use the NCPDP Terminology.

Metathesaurus Update Frequency
The NCPDP Terminology is updated annually as part of the NCI Thesaurus in the Metathesaurus.
