American Medical Association. A primary source of US physician data. Many of the data resources are available for purchase. The AMA also publishes:
- Physician characteristics and distribution in the US. Data from AMA Physician Masterfile,
includes national and state breakdowns of physician activity by self-designated specialty. Trends and historical data provided.
- State medical licensure requirements and statistics. Includes state licensing board statistics for MDs, DOs, and international medical graduates.
American Nurses Association. Provides data about registered nurses. The ANA publishes Nursing Now Facts, an overview of the number of nursing jobs in the US and the predicted job growth of nurses.
Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) provides data on medical school applicants, physician workforce, medical specialists, practicing physicians, and physicians in training. The AAMC publishes Workforce Data and Reports.
MGMA Physician Compensation and Production Survey. Divided by specialty, geographic region, and weeks worked per year. Includes compensation for four types of nonphysician providers: nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants-surgical; physician assistants-primary care. Available for purchase.
National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
National League for Nursing (NLN). This is the professional organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. The NLN publishes Nursing Education Statistics.
National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, National Science Foundation. Survey of Doctorate Recipients. Data on employment, education, and demographic characteristics of scientists and engineers in the United States. Categories include biological sciences, sociology, psychology, health. Public use files cover 1993-2013.
