Introduction to Health Services Research : A Self-Study Course

Case 1. Health Disparities Research Case (Page 1 of 37)

Research Case Description

Recent reports on the rate of new HIV infections in the District of Columbia show a substantial increase compared with the national average particularly for African American males. Estimates now are that one in five black men in DC are infected with HIV.

You are a health services researcher at a university in the District of Columbia. You want research on cost effective preventive medicine strategies that address disparities in AIDS rates among African Americans in DC.

You have heard that research approaches that involve community groups as active participants have reported greater success and acceptance than approaches in which community members are only passive subjects of research (Israel, 2001).

You want to work with community groups and front-line medical workers in this research in order to make this research more relevant and effective.

The following Case background, objectives and exercise will help you think about the project.
