NLM Online Users' Meeting: PowerPoint Presentations

[Editor's note: These are the questions and answers from the NLM Online Users' Meeting at the Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association in Washington, DC, May 24, 2010. The answers may have been modified to provide more complete information.]

Question:

Are there plans to integrate the PMCID with PubMed® records? I’ve received several requests from faculty who are doing grants and have said that they have to report the PMCID numbers in their grants and so inevitably what they have to do is go back in to PubMed Central® and look each one up and the PMCID.

Answer:

The PubMed Central ID (PMCID) was integrated with PubMed citations in 2008. You can find it on the MEDLINE® and XML display formats but most easily on the Abstract format (see Figure 1). [Editor's note: See Skill Kit: PubMed Central® ID and PubMed® for additional information.]

Question:

Will any of the Go Local partners be continuing and, if so, how do we get to those Web sites?

Answer:

There are two current partners, North Carolina and South Carolina, who did not use the NLM system to build their Go Local sites. They will continue with their own locally-hosted system and their URLs will stay the same. There are a few partners who are considering pursuing their own local solution. At this time I’m not aware of what their URLs might be. [Editor's note: See NLM® to Discontinue Support of MedlinePlus® Go Local for additional information.]

Question:

Will all of MedlinePlus® be available for preview for the redesign?

Answer:

The online preview of the MedlinePlus redesign contains screen captures of some of the English and Spanish pages with descriptions of the key features of those pages. When we get closer to releasing the redesign this summer we will be able to let the medical library community know in advance that the release is coming and we will give you the specific date. We do know that people have training materials that they need to update. If you have concerns about updating your training materials, please contact us through the redesign preview or through the feedback form on our site.

Question:

Please consider including a feature to make uploading to DOCLINE® easy. This feature was available in the past but not a lot of people used it and it was dropped. Centralizing our system would make our lives easier.

Answer:

There are a lot of challenges to that but we know that our libraries would like us to automate updating of serials holdings. We are considering options.
