NCBI Virtual Workshop Series: An NCBI Guide to Finding and Analyzing Metagenomic Data

NCBI Virtual Workshop Series: An NCBI Guide to Finding and Analyzing Metagenomic Data. NLM Tech Bull. 2022 Sep-Oct;(448):b7.

2022 September 30 [posted]

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is pleased to announce an upcoming virtual workshop that is now accepting applications. The NCBI Education Team invites you to apply and share this opportunity with any colleagues who may be interested. We would appreciate it if you could publicize this workshop to researchers and educators at your institutions.

Our NCBI Virtual Workshops series was developed last fall to expand our reach to individuals who use NCBI resources for biological/biomedical research, science education, and clinical application efforts. Please review the workshop description to understand the intended audience. Each workshop will accept a limited number of participants to facilitate the best possible educational experience.

Title: An NCBI Guide to Finding and Analyzing Metagenomic Data

Date and time: Tuesday, October 25, 2022, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. ET

Description: Metagenomics is the study of genetic material collected from a mixed community of organisms within their original environmental conditions. Recent efforts in this field have studied clinical and environmental samples to characterize the taxonomic composition and biological properties of microbial communities within the living ecosystem. This work often involves large, complex multi-organism datasets and specific tools to untangle unique components of a sample. For years, NCBI has been storing and making available metagenomic sequences and their natural origins (e.g., metadata) in a variety of formats. More recently, we have also created some tools for analyzing metagenomic data, such as MagicBLAST (a tool to align high-throughput sequence reads to a reference sequence) and STAT (a tool to map high-throughput sequence read data on a taxonomic hierarchy).

This workshop is designed for researchers to gain hands-on experience with accessing and analyzing metagenomic data using the various relevant resources available on the NCBI website. Additionally, some exercises in this workshop will provide experience with a Jupyter Notebook for bash- and python-based accessing and processing of this metagenomic data.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Search and retrieve metagenomic sequence data from multiple NCBI databases
  • Explore STAT-generated taxonomic compositional analysis of SRA metagenomic reads
  • Align SRA metagenomic reads to a NCBI sequence database using MagicBLAST

Application close date: October 14, 2022

Due to curricular and technical limits, we've capped the number of spots to provide the best workshop experience. If you register to apply, you will be notified of your application status 2 weeks before the scheduled event.

We recommend having access to a stable internet connection and modern web browser on a laptop or desktop computer to be able to successfully participate in the hands-on exercises.

Please see our FAQs page for more information and if you still have questions about the NCBI Outreach Events program or this specific workshop, email us at workshops@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
