MEDLARS PRICING SCHEDULE

Effective October 1, 1998

The following is a listing of annual license fees for databases available for lease from NLM. There are no use charges and no surcharge for non-U.S. use.

CATFILE   USMARC-compatible bibliographic records for print, audiovisual, and electronic monographs and serials cataloged by NLM. This replaces AVLINE and CATLINE. All new and updated records will be made available for licensees to ftp on a weekly basis; each file will be kept on the server for 6 weeks. Current year: $4,000; updated weekly via ftp only. Basefile (up to current year): $3,000; contact NLM to discuss delivery mechanism.

   
CATLINE   Ceased regular distribution in October 1998. Beginning with 1999, all NLM bibliographic records for material cataloged by NLM are available in a combined USMARC-compatible file called CATFILE.

SDILINE   $5,000 updated monthly (if leased separately from MEDLINE).

   
SERFILE   USMARC-compatible bibliographic records for ALL serial data in the NLM bibliographic file (including serials on order, in process, or recorded for Regional Holdings). This replaces SERLINE. All new and updated records will be made available for licensees to ftp on a weekly basis; each file will be kept on the server for 6 weeks. Current year: $1,000; updated weekly via ftp only. Basefile (up to current year): $1,000; via ftp only. [Note: all 1998 SERLINE licensees will receive the backfile at no charge in early 1999]. Certain serials data are also available at no cost from NLM's Web site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/journals_database_faq.html.

   
SERLINE   Ceased regular distribution in October 1998, though some records will continue to be added/updated and distributed until early 1999 when SERLINE is replaced by a USMARC-compatible file of NLM Serial information called SERFILE.

TOXLINE/TOXLINE65  
$2,500 plus royalties for the current file (1981 through the current year).
$2,500 plus royalties for the backfile (1965-80).

The NIOSHTIC subfile produced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is not distributed in the leased databases. There are tape royalties for TOXLINE and TOXLINE65 which must be negotiated with and paid directly to two of the file content providers, Biological Abstracts, Incorporated (BIOSIS) and the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP). Licensees must make separate arrangements with those data suppliers in advance.

There are two leasing options available for TOXLINE and TOXLINE65:
1. all subfiles except NIOSHTIC;
2. all subfiles except NIOSHTIC, BIOSIS, and IPA. The charges are the same. Please specify which TOXLINE version is to be licensed.

   

ADDITIONAL FEES

  1. Sample data:
    A sample tape is available upon written request for a fee of $50.00. (There is no fee for AIDSDRUGS/AIDSTRIALS, AIDSLINE, or DIRLINE sample tapes.) MeSH data are available from NLM's Web site at no charge.
  2. Replacement tapes:
    Replacement tapes cost $75.00/tape.

MEDLARS DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE WORLD WIDE WEB

  1. MeSH VOCABULARY DATA:
    The National Library of Medicine makes its annual Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) available for downloading in several formats from the MeSH page on the NLM World Wide Web site (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/filelist.html). There is no charge or license required for each Web-based version; however, completion of an online memorandum of understanding is required to obtain the complete file in each format. Sample data are available.
    1. MeSH TREES FILE: contains MeSH Headings with their associated hierarchical tree numbers (referred to as the "Trees file"). Subheadings and supplementary chemical records are not included. Updated annually.
    2. MeSH in MARC-COMPATIBLE FORMAT - contains MeSH Headings, subheadings and combination records in MARC-compatible format. Supplementary chemical records are not included. Updated annually.
    3. ASCII MeSH - contains MeSH Headings in ASCII format with all data elements contained in the online MeSH Vocabulary database at NLM included. Subheadings and supplementary chemical records are included. Updated quarterly with new/changed chemical records.
  2. SERIALS DATA:
    Serials data are available at no cost from the NLM World Wide Web site http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/journals_database_faq.html. A license agreement is not required to obtain these data.
