Case 4: Bioterrorism -- Community Preparedness (Page 7 of 49)
Phase One: Thinking About the Issues
Q2a. Which community institutions are affected? And why?
Suggested Solution
By now you probably have quite a list of stakeholders. Below is listed a number of possible stakeholders. What group or groups did you think of that are not listed below?
Community institutions and stakeholders include
- hospitals
- public health departments
- law enforcement
- emergency medical professionals (EMTs)
- doctors' offices
- schools and school health nurses, and administrators and teachers
- community organizations
- communication centers (e.g., TV and newspapers)
- government (local, state, and federal)
- pharmacies
- international entities
- veterinarians
- mental health professionals
- the public and sub-groups such as the disabled
Why are these institutions concerned/affected by bioterrorism and community preparedness?
Either these institutions are
- the first identifiers of the problem of a biological attack (e.g., doctors' offices, schools, public health departments, law enforcement, EMTs), or they must provide care to the sick (e.g., physicians' offices, hospitals, EMTs), or
- they have a responsibility to keep track of those who get sick by collecting data (e.g., public health departments, government at all levels, schools), or
- they are responsible for creating policies and regulations (e.g., public health departments, government, others)
- or have other significant responsibilities
Don't forget about the public as you consider who is mainly affected by bioterrorism.
