Applications
There are three projects being developed as Vesalius
applications [Figure 4]. Neuroanatomy
project, while anatomical in nature does not, at this point, include Visible
Human images. The Pelvis Lesson which is described in [5]
is a blend of many kinds of multimedia material including drawings, animated
2D images, 3D interactive models obtained from 2D photographs of ``life''
pelvic structures and 3D visualizations of the Visible Human data. The
Skull Project [Figure 3] is an innovative interactive
application which uses an ``exploded'' skull built from the actual photographs
of the whole skull and its subparts. In a very clever way a user can ``play''
with the parts, like a puzzle, removing them and putting together. Also,
and a pseudo-3D model of a skull was obtained from photographs of the actual
human skull.
Our applications use a mix of Visible Human
3D models and visualizations from photographs and merged media such as
drawings overlayed on photographed
3D models. We have found this technique necessary because some of the
structures modeled from the Visible Human data currently lack sufficient
detail for teaching anatomy.
We have two significant application projects
underway. The first is a partnering with the Anatomy and Cell Biology
Department in a complete revision of the clinical anatomy course to include
a significant role for computer-based learning. This new course will be
piloted in 2000. The second is the development of an introduction
to physical examination skills using digital video, the use of anatomical
landmarks, common and critical findings, and the like.
