How's NLM Doing, Communicating Its Message?

The following "snapshot" shows the kind of coverage NLM has gotten in recent months, in the print and electronic media.

  • From The Wall Street Journal, July 14, 2000,
NLM is described as: ".by far the most comprehensive and reliable source of professional medical literature. Originally designed for medical professionals, the library launched MEDLINEplus in 1998 to make data more accessible to patients."
  • From The Washington Post, June 18, 2000:
".We nearly decided not to bother listing any other sites after spending a few hours with the remarkably well-edited MEDLINEplus, a service of the National Library of Medicine."
  • From The New York Times, August 31, 1999:
"(www.nlm.nih.gov) provides access to the world's largest biomedical library. Try the Library's easy- access site: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus"
  • From The Los Angeles Times, June 19, 2000:
".the National Library of Medicine has a consumer-friendly gateway called MEDLINEplus. Sure, you can access MEDLINE, but the 'plus' is where it is at."
  • From the Journal of the American Medical Association's online "JAMA PATIENT PAGE," September 12, 2000:
"The main source of information for searching for articles in English- language medical journals is MEDLINE, which is a database maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine."
  • From "Consumer Reports Online," September 22, 2000:
".The best place to start is usually MEDLINEplus, the National Library of Medicine's consumer- health web site."
  • Between January and September 2000,
articles about MEDLINEplus appeared in 752 newspaper and magazine articles across all 50 states. These reached an estimated 256 million readers and appeared in 70% of the top media markets in the U.S.
  • The Associated Press and The Washington Post Health section
frequently refer readers to MEDLINEplus for additional information about topics discussed in their articles.
  • NLM has been the subject of several TV broadcast specials. Doreen Gentzler, news anchor for the NBC affiliate in Washington, DC, WRC-TV, featured MEDLINEplus in three separate spots this summer, and the station currently points to MEDLINEplus as its health information source, on its home page.
  • Between October 1999 and September 2000,
NIH distributed a radio public service announcement about MEDLINEplus to over 400 stations nationwide. During that same period, Radio UNICA aired a Spanish translation of the same message and recorded over 260 placements.

Thanks to Kathy Cravedi, Public Liaison Officer, NLM, for invaluable assistance with this article.
