Exercise programs in Hawai‘i incorporate culturally appropriate activities such as hula, canoeing and lua

- If you just go back to the complex carbohydrates, which is the taro and the sweet potato and the bananas, and weight loss would be done. Try to be more appropriate for exercise. I mean, you know, people don’t here go on treadmills. They would much rather jump in a canoe or go up the mountain.

- Well, that’s fine.
- [Aluli:]
- You know, more things dancing “hula”— you know, doing the so-called “lua,” which is the warrior kind of training. All those, we try to incorporate into the different programs, and it’s working.
