- In 1519, the Spanish came to Mobile, Alabama and they met some Native people, and those Native people were Choctaw speakers. And then, of course, in 1590—I’m sorry—1540, Desoto came through and also met Choctaw speakers, so we had a relationship with the Europeans for a very long time, longer than most tribes.
