AD 1680: The pueblos revolt in New Mexico

Pueblo people revolt against their Spanish oppressors. The pueblos, led by the religious leader Popé from the Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh, rise up and successfully drive the Spanish out of New Mexico, 140 years after their arrival.

Spain does not reenter Ohkay Owingeh territory until 1692. A statue of Popé now stands in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.
