1833: Flood destroys Choctaw farms; endangers tribe
In June, the Arkansas River floods its banks and washes away the first-year farms started by Choctaws after the U.S. forcibly removed them from their homelands. Already made vulnerable by the U.S. policy of dislocation, the Choctaw face famine. The elders and young children, weakened by hunger and successive epidemics, are most at risk of dying.
