1947: Office of Indian Affairs upgraded to bureau
The Office of Indian Affairs is upgraded to a governmental bureau, and renamed the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). As a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Interior, the BIA has more authority and more resources to meet the needs of American Indians and reservations.
