1988: Congress renews health care, self-governance project for tribes

The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Amendments of 1988 and the Omnibus Appropriations Act for 1988 “Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project” provide for a five-year project through which tribes will obtain federal dollars to demonstrate self-governance. The law will help tribes to take over the delivery of many health services that the Indian Health Service once provided for them.

“Public Law 100-472, the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act Amendments of 1988, was passed October 5, 1988, to simplify the self-determination contracting process and facilitate the assumption of IHS programs by tribal governments.” —Indian Health Service website, 2010
