1997: New hospital replaces 1950s IHS medical center in Anchorage

The new Alaska Native Medical Center replaces the Anchorage Medical Center built by the Indian Health Service in 1953. The new facility provides acute, specialty, primary, and behavioral care, plus comprehensive medical services and primary care for Alaska Natives and video teleconferencing for patients in rural areas.

The Alaska Native Medical Center sells Alaska Native artwork and jewelry in its gift shop, giving the hospital the unusual distinction of being listed by Fodor’s online travel guide as a top place to purchase Alaska Native art in Anchorage.
