2008: Native Hawaiians found center to study their health

Papa Ola Lokahi, the leading agency advocating for Native Hawaiian health, establishes the National Native Hawaiian Epidemiology Center to collect, analyze, and report on Native Hawaiian health-related data. The center is modeled on similar programs for American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. Maile Taualii, who is Native Hawaiian and the former associate director of the Urban Indian Health Institute in Seattle, Washington, is named director of the center.
