1998: Federal records begin to track Native Hawaiian health

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget changes its standards of racial and ethnic reporting in federal data, separating Native Hawaiian epidemiological reporting from that of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the state of Hawai‘i. Native Hawaiians have unique health concerns, which have more in common with other indigenous populations than with the general U.S. population. By tracking Native Hawaiians’ health factors separately, there is a better chance of identifying Native Hawaiians’ needs.
