1872: Apache leader Cochise negotiates an end to conflict and preserves land

Cochise (1812-1874) led the Chiricahua band of the Apache tribe. Ten years after the American government took over the land now known as Arizona and New Mexico, Cochise was falsely accused of kidnapping a white child, attacked and wounded, and imprisoned. He escaped and led the Apache in the ensuing war. In 1872, Cochise negotiated an end to the conflict with General Oliver O. Howard, which created a new reservation on Apache homeland.
