The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce that unique identifiers have been added to the MedlinePlus Genetics API. 

This attribute provides a unique identifier for each entry in the Summaries XML file:


  • Genetic Conditions <health-condition-summary id="xxxxx">
  • Genes <gene-summary id="xxxxx">
  • Chromosomes <chromosome-summary id="xxxxx">
  • mtDNA <mtdna-summary id="xxxx">

To support the new id attribute, please download the updated XML Schema Definition (XSD). The updated MedlinePlus Genetics XML with unique identifiers is available.

MedlinePlus Genetics provides programmatic retrieval of selected data via API. Information from individual genetic condition, gene, chromosome, and mtDNA pages is available in XML and JSON. To learn more, visit MedlinePlus Genetics Data Files & API.
