1957: Congress funds hospital, clinic construction on reservations

Congress appropriates funds for grants to tribal communities to construct hospitals to serve Indians and non-Indians.

The Indian Health Facilities Act of 1957 (P.L. 85-151) recognizes that the lack of adequate clinic and hospital facilities on Indian lands, particularly in remote locations, limits the provision of medical care to Indian peoples.
