NLM Deprecating Certain UMLS Semantic Types

NLM Deprecating Certain UMLS Semantic Types. NLM Tech Bull. 2015 Jan-Feb;(402):b1.

2015 January 07 [posted]

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is deprecating certain Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) semantic types that are used infrequently. Beginning with the 2015AA release, Concept Unique Identifiers (CUIs) that are categorized with these deprecated semantic types will be re-categorized with the parent semantic type. The table below lists the semantic types that will no longer exist as of 2015AA as well as the replacement semantic type in each case. Please note that there are no new semantic types being created as a result of this effort.

Deprecated Semantic Type Replacement Semantic Type
Neuroreactive Substance or Biogenic Amine Biologically Active Substance
Organophosphorus Compound Organic Chemical
Carbohydrate Organic Chemical
Lipid Organic Chemical
Steroid Organic Chemical
Eicosanoid Organic Chemical
