​Postdoctoral Intramural Research Training Awards (IRTAs) Program

This program offers advanced instruction and research experience under the guidance of an investigator. Recent PhD graduates take part in research studies, apply the knowledge they have learned, and improve their research abilities while working full-time at the NLM Division of Intramural Research conducting biomedical research. NLM offers research opportunities in computational biology and computational health research.

Length of Award

The duration of initial appointments can range from one to three years, with extensions possible in one-year increments up to a maximum of five years.

Eligibility

To be considered for the Postdoctoral Intramural Research Training Awards Program, applicants should be:

  • U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and international applicants are eligible for the program
  • Must have received your doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DDS, or equivalent) within five years of starting the program, or certification by a university as meeting all the requirements leading to such a doctorate

Application Process

The postdoc application is open year-round. It is recommended to apply nine months prior to your preferred start date. Additional program details are available on the Postdoc Fellows webpage of the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education.
