Seven Additional "Partners In Information Access" Awards Announced

Public Health Professionals to Benefit from Innovative Projects

Seven additional "Partners In Information Access" awards totaling nearly a quarter of a million dollars were jointly announced by the National Library of Medicine and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) in May. These outreach projects are part of the joint Partners In Information Access program for public health professionals, which also involves the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of County and City Health Officials, and the Public Health Foundation. The Partners web site is at www.nnlm.nlm.nih.gov/partners/.

These awards bring to 20 the number of contracts funded under this program. Thirteen were awarded last October (/news/press_releases/pubhthpr.html)

"Public health professionals lag far behind those providing individual patient care when it comes to access to information technology and electronic information services," observed Betsy Humphreys, NLM Associate Director for Library Operations. "This is a serious problem because public health workers have an equally compelling need for up- to-date information as they deal with emerging and longstanding threats to the health of the communities they serve. In these projects," she continued, "Health sciences libraries work with government and community organizations to connect public health professionals to electronic information services and to teach them how to use these services effectively."

The goals of the Partnership are to:

  1. increase public health professionals' awareness of the services of the NLM, NN/LM and CDC;
  2. assist public health professionals in getting connected to the Internet;
  3. train them in using information technology and information services; and
  4. increase awareness of public health information needs and resources among NN/LM members.
The seven new awards (described on the Partners web site at www.nnlm.nlm.nih.gov/partners/public.html) were presented to:
  • University of Connecticut Health Center Library Farmington, CT
  • Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center Health Sciences Library Albany, GA
  • University of Rochester Edward G. Miner Library Rochester, NY
  • University of North Dakota Harley French Library Grand Forks, ND
  • Vanderbilt University The Annette and Irwin Eskind Biomedical Library Nashville, TN
  • Houston Academy of Medicine Texas Medical Center Library Houston, TX
