Becky Lyon Named Deputy Associate Director of Library
Operations
Former Head of National Network Office Assumed Post in
December
Becky J. Lyon, head of the National Network of Libraries
of Medicine (NN/LM) Office, has been selected as the new Deputy
Associate Director of Library Operations, filling a position vacated
when Betsy L. Humphreys was appointed Associate Director in late
May.
"Becky Lyon brings an
impressive combination of attributes to this important position,"
Humphreys explained. "She has broad knowledge of NLM's programs, an
understanding of important issues of concern to health sciences
libraries, and experience in developing outreach programs for both
health professionals and the general public."
Lyon first came to NLM in 1972 as an NLM Associate and then held
positions in NLM's Technical Services Division, where she was
instrumental in the original automation of book acquisitions
functions, and in the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical
Communications, where she managed an experimental computer-assisted
instruction network. She left NLM to head network services for the
Library of Congress's National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped and later directed network development for
the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Office Library Division.
Since 1984, Lyon has headed the NLM office that directs the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine program. In this capacity,
she has played a major role in expanding NN/LM outreach initiatives,
including recent efforts to reach the general public. In 1986, Lyon
received the NIH Award of Merit for her management of the NN/LM.
Among many other achievements, Lyon assisted with the national
deployment of DOCLINE, directed efforts to increase Internet
connectivity among hospital libraries, and chaired the initial study
that led to the recent consolidation of first line customer service
within Library Operations. She also co-chaired the Department of
Health and Human Services Customer Service Working Group from 1997
to 1999. |
