How Will NLM Chart its Course in the Early 21st Century?
Draft of Long Range Plan to Appear in January

Dr. Elliot Siegel, NLM's Associate Director for Health
Information Programs Development, acknowledged with thanks the
excellent help the Library continues to receive from its many
constituent communities, and the tribute this is to NLM Director Dr.
Donald Lindberg's leadership.>
Part of the basis for discussion was "The NLM Track Record,"
which consolidates many of the significant programs and
recommendations of past NLM Long Range planning efforts, and updates
these with brief notations of past accomplishments and current
program plans. This document was prepared in August 1999 and sent to
a large group of advisors and past planning panel participants for
input. It was also posted on NLM's web site for public comment. That
input was shared with NLM's Board of Regents in September.
NLM's original Long Range Plan was published in 1987. It spanned
all areas of NLM's research and service components, those underway
at that time or contemplated for the succeeding 20-year period. In
the intervening years, NLM also published additions to the plan that
addressed specific topics. Important efforts have been launched by
NLM as a result, including the establishment of a major new division
-- the National Center for Biotechnology Information -- and the
creation of such high impact programs as UMLS, Grateful Med, the
Visible Human, the High Performance Computing and Communications
Program, and Outreach.
The resulting "Long Range Plan 2000-2005" will be made available
to the public when it is finalized, via the NLM web site.

Analysis, Office of Health Information Programs Development, for
invaluable assistance with this article. More details about the Long
Range Plan will appear in the next issue of NLM NEWSLINE. |
