Steven J. Phillips, MD, has been named Assistant NLM
Director for Research and Education. Dr. Phillips is a
cardiothoracic surgeon who most recently was Medical Director and
Director of Research at the Iowa Heart Institute, Des Moines. He has
had a distinguished career in cardiovascular surgery and research,
and established the cardiac surgery and heart transplant program at
Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where he served as Medical Director.
His team there performed the first artificial heart surgery in Iowa
and pioneered the technology for emergency coronary bypass surgery
during heart attacks and percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass. "The
Library is fortunate to acquire the services of someone with such
superb medical and scientific credentials," said NLM Director Dr.
Donald A.B. Lindberg in making the announcement. "Dr. Phillips is
well acquainted with the Library's mission and programs, having
served as an appointed member and as Chairman of the NLM Board of
Regents from 1994 to 1998." The Assistant Director for Research and
Education is the Library's principal medical advisor on research and
medical education priorities.

William J. Willmering retired in April after 18 and a half
years as head of the Serial Records Section, Technical Services
Division. In this position, he managed the selection, acquisition
and processing of over 22,000 current serial titles annually for the
NLM collection, the development and maintenance of online files to
support serials activities, and the production and distribution of
products containing serials bibliographic and locator data. His area
also was responsible for the continued development of SERHOLD, the
national biomedical serials holdings database integrated library
system. In 1992, Willmering received the prestigious Frank B. Rogers
Award in recognition of his "significant contributions to the
development of automated systems that improve NLM's ability to
acquire and provide access to the biomedical serials literature.
Willmering received his M.S.L.S. from the University of Illinois,
Urbana.
Janice Lennox, Head of the Acquisitions Unit in the Serial
Records Section of NLM since 1985, has announced her retirement.
Lennox began her career at NLM in 1971, working for Dave McCarn in
the Lister Hill Center. She went on to hold a number of positions in
Library Operations. Her conscientious management of NLM's 25,000
serial subscriptions has been a major contribution to the Library
and to the health sciences community.
NLM Executive Officer Donald C. Poppke was recently named
an "NIH Champion of Diversity" for his commitment to fostering an
inclusive work force that promotes respect for diversity. He has
served as vice-chair and chair of the NIH Diversity Council and
taken an active leadership role on the NLM Diversity Council.
Frances Humphrey Howard, NLM Special Assistant to the
Associate Director, Division of Extramural Programs, has received
the Institute of International Education's Duggan Award. She was
hailed for the significant contributions she has made toward
increasing understanding and ties between citizens of the U.S. and
those of other nations. The IIE administers the Fulbright Student
and Scholar Programs, among numerous other educational and cultural
exchanges. The Duggan Award, named for the Institute's first
president, Stephen P. Duggan, Sr., is the IIE's most prestigious
honor.
George R. Thoma, PhD, Chief, Communications Engineering
Branch, Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications,
NLM, has been named a Fellow of SPIE, the International Society for
Optical Engineering. Fellows are distinguished individuals who have
made significant technical and scientific contributions in optics
and optoelectronics, and who have served with distinction the
general optics community. Dr. Thoma was cited for technical
accomplishments and extensive contributions in the areas of image
processing, document image understanding, and biomedical image
databases.
NLM Board of Regents Member John Gage was one of 10
technology pioneers awarded the prestigious 1999
Computerworld/Smithsonian "Innovation Award." Gage is Director of
the Science Office at Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation.
The newly-named Lois Ann Colaianni Award for Excellence and
Achievement in Hospital Librarianship, awarded to Medical Library
Association members who have made significant contributions to the
profession, was presented for the first time to Jacqueline
Bastille, Director, Treadwell Library, Massachusetts General
Hospital, Boston. Lois Ann Colaianni recently retired after a
distinguished career as NLM's Associate Director for Library
Operations.
Lois Ann Colaianni recently received the Council of
Biology Editors' Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes
excellence in the volunteer contributions of CBE members. The CBE
cited her excellent presentations on bibliographic issues considered
central to the concerns of the organization, and her invaluable
contribution to CBE's Scope and Mandate Task Force.
The 1999 Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award has
been awarded to Kathleen M. McCloskey of the University of
Utah for her outstanding efforts to reach rural, underserved
communities in Utah. The DeBakey Award is sponsored by the Friends
of the National Library of Medicine (FNLM), to recognize an
outstanding librarian in the area of outreach to rural, unaffiliated
or underserved medical populations. McCloskey's selection was based
on her one-person effort to ensure that rural physicians and other
health professionals in her state have access to the latest
life-saving medical information available. The Award is named in
honor of the internationally known heart surgeon and former NLM
Board of Regents Chair, Michael E. DeBakey, MD. |
