MeSH Coming Attractions

New in 2000 MeSH
The following changes and additions are of particular importance and interest for 2000:

  • Nervous System Diseases (C10) were reorganized and the vocabulary was extensively revised to reflect current developments. There were 214 new headings added to the Nervous System Diseases (C10) tree and 24 terms were added to the Central Nervous System tree (A8). New terms in these two trees account for almost half of the new descriptors added this year.
  • Symptoms and General Pathology, the C23 tree, was extensively modified with a number of new terms added. Many terms that are also in other trees were removed from this tree.
  • GTP-Binding Proteins, in the D tree, were expanded with the addition of 16 specific proteins and many associated enzymes along with the rearrangement of closely related concepts.
  • The Plants (B6) tree had 13 new descriptors added to identify plants of medicinal interest.
  • The C21 tree, formerly called Injuries, Poisonings, and Occupational Diseases, has been renamed Disorders of Environmental Origin.

Statistical Summary of Changes to 2000 MeSH
The following table is a brief statistical summary of the changes made to the 2000 MeSH.

552 descriptors were added representing concepts with no directly corresponding descriptors in 1999 MeSH (i.e., new concepts and records)
130 descriptors were replaced with more up-to-date terminology
16 descriptors were deleted
2141 see references (print entry terms) were added

Publication Types and Subheadings
There were no new Publication Types or subheadings added or deleted for 2000. The only change is to the subheading "Drug Therapy" as shown below (the deleted words are italicized):

1999 scope note for "Drug Therapy":
Used with disease headings for the treatment of disease by the administration of drugs, chemicals, and antibiotics. For diet therapy and radiotherapy, use specific subheadings. Excludes immunotherapy and treatment with biologicals for which "therapy" is used.

2000 scope note for "Drug Therapy":
Used with disease headings for the treatment of disease by the administration of drugs, chemicals, and antibiotics. For diet therapy and radiotherapy, use specific subheadings. Excludes immunotherapy for which "therapy" is used.

Previously, treatment of a disease with biological factors and products which are treed in D24, required coordination of the disease with /therapy rather than /drug therapy. With the development of recombinant forms of these drugs, such as Interferons, it became more difficult for both indexers and searchers to recognize whether the substance being prescribed was a "drug" or a "biological product". Thus, we will routinely now coordinate all of these substances with the disease/drug therapy.

For comprehensive searching in PubMed, remember to use the broader subheading "/therapy" since PubMed automatically explodes subheadings and thus will retrive citations indexed using both definitions. For example, to search PubMed to find citations discussing BCG Vaccine (a D24 concept) and the treatment of tuberculosis use the search strategy:

bcg vaccine AND tuberculosis/therapy

If you wished to find citations indexed using one of the two scope notes then use the search strategy:

For citations indexed during or after the 2000 indexing year:

bcg vaccine AND tuberculosis/drug therapy

For citations indexed before the 2000 indexing year:

bcg vaccine AND tuberculosis/therapy [mh:noexp]

2000 MeSH terms for symptoms and related disorders

There are six symptoms for which MeSH has also provided a precoordinated disorder term. The symptoms are in both C10 (Nervous System Diseases) and in C23 (Symptoms and General Pathology), while the disorders are only in C10. In each case, the scope notes for the symptom reminds you that diseases which are characterized by persistence or recurrence of the symptom should be indexed and searched for as the precoordinated disorder.

Symptom Disorder
Chorea (C10, C23)Choreatic Disorders (C10)
Dyskinesias (C10, C23)Dyskenesia Syndromes see Movement Disorders (C10)
Dystonia (C10, C23)Dystonic Disorders (C10)
Facial Pain (C10, C23)Facial Pain Syndromes see Facial Neuralgia (C10)
Headache (C10, C23)Headache Disorders (C10)
Tics (C10, C23)Tic Disorders (C10)
