Dr. Simon Liu

"We are fortunate to get someone with Dr. Liu's background in computers, communications, and management," NLM Director Lindberg observed. "He brings to the position an unusual combination of practical experience and high-level academic achievement."

In his position as Director of Information Systems, he directs the programs of the Office of Computer and Communications Systems and its staff of 60, who provide the NLM backbone computer networking facilities and support other NLM components in local area networking. OCCS also provides professional programming services and computational and data processing facilities to meet NLM program needs. This division of NLM operates and maintains the NLM Computer Center, designs and develops software, and provides extensive customer support, training courses and seminars, and documentation for computer and network users.

Dr. Liu holds a doctorate in computer science from George Washington University, an MBA from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Science degree in computer science from Indiana University. Dr. Liu completed his undergraduate work in mathematics at Chung Yuan University in Taiwan.

In addition to his work with the Federal government, Dr. Liu serves as an adjunct professor of computer science at the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, and as an adjunct professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. He is the editor of IT Professional Magazine, a publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and he is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
