Director of Computer Operations Named
Dr. Simon Liu Brings Practical Experience, Academic
Achievement
NLM Director Donald A.B. Lindberg, M.D., has announced the
appointment of Simon Y. Liu, Ph.D., as Director of Information
Systems. Dr. Liu comes to the Library from the Department of
Justice, where he served most recently as Acting Director of the
Information Management and Security Staff.
"We are fortunate to get someone with Dr. Liu's background in
computers, communications, and management," NLM Director Lindberg
observed. "He brings to the position an unusual combination of
practical experience and high-level academic achievement."
In his position as Director of Information Systems, he directs
the programs of the Office of Computer and Communications Systems
and its staff of 60, who provide the NLM backbone computer
networking facilities and support other NLM components in local area
networking. OCCS also provides professional programming services and
computational and data processing facilities to meet NLM program
needs. This division of NLM operates and maintains the NLM Computer
Center, designs and develops software, and provides extensive
customer support, training courses and seminars, and documentation
for computer and network users.
Dr. Liu holds a doctorate in computer science from George
Washington University, an MBA from the University of Maryland, and a
Master of Science degree in computer science from Indiana
University. Dr. Liu completed his undergraduate work in mathematics
at Chung Yuan University in Taiwan.
In addition to his work with the Federal government, Dr. Liu
serves as an adjunct professor of computer science at the Whiting
School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, and as an adjunct
professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of
Maryland. He is the editor of IT Professional Magazine, a
publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
(IEEE), and he is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. |
