Historian Dr. James (Jim) Cassedy, NLM History of Medicine
Division, has been named as the recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement Award of the American Association for the History of
Medicine. This award was presented at the annual American
Association for the History of Medicine meeting in Bethesda,
Maryland, on May 20th.
Frances Johnson has retired from NLM's Extramural Programs
Division after a long and distinguished career. After completing the
NLM's Associates Program in 1967, Frances Johnson joined Extramural
Programs as a Grants Program Officer. During those 33 years, Fran
devoted her efforts to improving medical libraries. It was through
her dedication and quiet persistence that many successful grant
initiatives were implemented to support academic and hospital
libraries. She worked to get grant support for library collections,
construction and renovation projects, library automation,
information systems and information access projects. And she helped
begin the Internet Connections grants, which have helped many health
institutions gain access to the Web.
Fran was extremely active in and supportive of the Medical
Library Association. For example, she edited a "Symposium on
Internet Connections" for the MLA Bulletin in 1996, advised many
librarians, and has taught numerous continuing education courses on
writing library grant proposals. "These are but a few of her
accomplishments, for which we will always be deeply grateful," noted
former MLA president and frequent NLM collaborator Naomi Broering.
"Fran will be missed, but I know that living on the Chesapeake Bay
in a brand new home will be a wonderful new venture for her."
Dr. Milton Corn, NLM Acting Associate Director for
Extramural Programs, hailed Ms. Johnson's innovative spirit,
willingness to share her vast store of knowledge with others, and
consummate professionalism. "Since the initiation of NLM's programs
of grant assistance to health science libraries, Frances Johnson has
been program officer for a broad range of library resource grant
programs. She helped create the programs, publicized them, and
patiently helped hundreds of librarians across the nation navigate
the NIH grant process successfully. For health science librarians
across the nation, Frances Johnson has been a knowledgeable and
gracious representative of NLM for over three decades."
For his extraordinary contributions and service to the health
sciences information community, the Medical Library Association
(MLA) has selected Harold M. Schoolman, MD, to become one of
this year's honorary MLA member. Dr. Schoolman, former NLM Deputy
Director for Research and Education, has been instrumental in
developing programs important to medical librarians, including the
Library's National Network of Libraries of Medicine and the Unified
Medical Language System (UMLS). A former Acting Director of the
Library, Dr. Schoolman is widely known as an expert on several
issues facing the health sciences information profession. He had a
lengthy involvement in championing the Library's interest in
copyright issues, especially the doctrine of "fair use." And he
represented NLM at all congressional hearings on intellectual
property issues.
