(London, 1749). Copperplate engraving with etching. National Library of Medicine
Bernhard Siegfried Albinus
(1697-1770)
[anatomist]
Jan Wandelaar
(1690-1759)
[artist]
Albinus intended his figures to exemplify ideal humanity and an ideal of anatomical illustration. The cadaver, carefully chosen for its close approximation to classical ideals of proportion, stands with guardian angel hovering behind against a painterly backdrop.
