Updates to MEDLINE®/PubMed® XML Data Elements

The following elements have been modified in MEDLINE/PubMed XML Element Descriptions and their Attributes:

  • 2014 December 16- Added new UI attribute to <DescriptorName>, <QualifierName>, <NameOfSubstance>, <SupplMeshName> and <PublicationType> elements.
  • 2014 December 16- Added new optional and repeatable envelope element AffiliationInfo to <Author> and <Investigator> elements.
  • 2014 December 16- Moved <Affliliation> and <Identifier> elements to <AffiliationInfo>.
  • 2014 December 16- Removed <AbstractText> NlmCategory attribute valid value UNLABELLED.
  • 2014 December 16- Added new <CommentsCorrections> RefType attribute valid values AssociatedDataset and AssociatedPublication.
  • 2013 December 17 - Moved <Affiliation> from <Article> to <AuthorList> .
  • 2013 June 19 - Updated <Article> to add new PubMed attribute valid value Electronic-eCollection.
  • 2013 June 19 - Updated <AbstractText> to add new NlmCategory valid value UNASSIGNED.
  • 2012 December 21 - Updated <KeywordList> to add information about NLM now using Owner attribute valid value NOTNLM.
  • 2012 December 21 - Updated <MedlineCitation> to add information about NLM now using Owner attribute valid value NOTNLM for a <KeywordList>.
  • 2012 December 11 - Renamed <NameID> to <Identifier>.
  • 2012 December 11 - Added Language attribute to <OtherAbstract> to indicate language of abstract(s) not in MEDLINE/PubMed but available from the publisher.
  • 2011 December 14 - Added HHS to Owner attribute for <KeywordList>.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <Abstract> to incorporate information about structured abstracts. Includes information about <AbstractText> with its new attributes Label and NlmCategory.
  • 2011 June 22 - Added <SupplMeshList> and sub-element <SupplMeshName> with its attribute Type.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <DescriptorName> in <MeshHeadingList> to add information about Type attribute now used with <DescriptorName>.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <MedlineCitation> to add information about new VersionID and VersionDate attributes now used to handle citations to “versioned” articles.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <PMID> to add information about new Version attribute now used to handle citations to "versioned" articles.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <AuthorList> and <InvestigatorList> to add information about <NameID> which was added to the 2010 DTD as a placeholder (not yet in use).
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <GrantList> to reference forthcoming new funding source to be used in <Agency>.
  • 2011 June 22 - Updated <PubDate> to reference citations to versioned articles.
  • 2011 June 22 - Renumbered sections due to addition of new <SupplMeshList> section.
  • 2010 December 14 - References to former Entrez Journals database was removed from <MedlineTA> and <ISSN> sections.
  • 2010 May 06 - Updated author manuscript information in MedlineCitation Status = Publisher.
  • 2010 May 06 - Added RefType attribute information in <CommentsCorrections>; added Cites as RefType valid value. (Note: RefType valid values had previously been treated as elements in <CommentsCorrections>).
  • 2010 May 06 - Updated <GrantList> to add additional funding sources.
  • 2010 May 06 - Updated <ISOAbbreviation> to state that ISO abbreviations were retrospectively assigned.
  • 2010 May 06 - Updated <ISSNLinking> to state these data were added to records in the 2010 MEDLINE/PubMed baseline files.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added example and information about DateCompleted and former PubMed-not-MEDLINE records in <GeneralNote>.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added link to <GeneralNote> in <DateCompleted> and <MedlineCitation> Status attribute: In-Process.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added example and information about DateCompleted in <GeneralNote>.
  • 2009 April 02 - Deleted Consumer and added Publisher to list of Source attributes in <OtherAbstract>.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added information re: ValidYN attribute in <InvestigatorList>.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added NLM attribute and information re: PMCIDs in <OtherID>.
  • 2009 April 02 - Added <Country> and information re: hierarchical structure in <GrantList>.
  • 2008 September 08 - Added information about forward slash character included in LastName in <AuthorList>.
  • 2008 May 07 - Added example to <ELocationID>.
  • 2008 April 16 - Added <ELocationID> and updated relevant information in <Pagination>.
  • 2008 April 16 - Added <ISSNLinking> and updated relevant section of <ISSN>.
  • 2008 April 16 - Added information about new use of <InvestigatorList> and updated relevant section of <AuthorList>.
  • 2008 April 16 - Added two examples to <CommentsCorrections>.
  • 2008 February 19 - Added list of values for DatabankName in <DataBankList>.
  • 2007 November 05 - Added QCICL and QCIM to <OtherID>.
  • 2007 October 15 - Added e-article example to <Pagination>.
  • 2007 October 01 - Added clarification about when ClinicalTrials.gov and ISRCTN identifier numbers added to <DataBankList>.
  • 2007 July 17 - Added information about PubChem Substance to <DataBankList>.
  • 2007 April 19 - Added note about PubMed Central abstract data to<Abstract>
  • 2007 March 30 - Added more information about abstract data to <Abstract>
  • 2007 January 17 - Added PubChem identifiers to <DataBankList>.
  • 2006 December 11 - Added PartialRetractionOf and PartialRetractionIn to <CommentsCorrections>.
  • 2006 December 11 - Removed ending periods in <Title>.
  • 2006 December 11 - Changed references from OLDMEDLINE status in <MedlineCitation> to OLDMEDLINE <CitationSubset>, to better define this set of records. Beginning in 2007, OLDMEDLINE records where all original subject terms have been mapped to MeSH have the status of MEDLINE.
  • 2006 October 16 - Added QIS to <CitationSubset>. Edited subsets D, J, N and R to remove references to Index Medicus.
  • 2006 September 21 - Added RefSeq to <DataBankList>.
  • 2006 August 07 - Clarified spacing of initials in <AuthorList>.
  • 2006 July 11 - Updated <GrantList>: NLM began editing NIH grant numbers when letter O was incorrectly used in place of number 0.
  • 2006 June 06 - Updated <DataBankList>: retrospective maintenance to ISRCTN.
  • 2006 May 15 - Updated <AuthorList> to reflect new policy on interfiling collective names.
  • 2006 April 06 - Added information about [PubMed - author manuscript in PMC] in <MedlineCitation> Status attribute: Publisher. Added information about collective author order in <AuthorList>. Added Wellcome Trust information to <GrantList>. Added information about ISRCTN in <DataBankList>.
  • 2006 March 02 - Added information about use of <Note> in <CommentsCorrections> with <RetractionOf> and <RetractionIn>.
  • 2006 January 31 - Accession numbers for data deposited in NLM’s Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database added to the <DataBankList> element.
  • 2005 December 09 - Added <Journal>, <ISOAbbreviation>, <Title>, <JournalIssue>, Cited Medium attribute of <JournalIssue>, ISSNType attribute of <ISSN>
  • 2005 November 15 - <Notes> properties added to <CommentsCorrections>
