National Library of Medicine Awards Nearly $58 Million to Advance a Data-Driven Research Workforce

May 18, 2022

Over the next five years, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) will award nearly $58 million to support biomedical informatics and data science programs at 18 institutions. NLM will distribute this funding on an annual basis, granting a total of $11.5 million each year. Recipients will develop training programs to prepare pre and postdoctoral trainees for interdisciplinary scientific research careers. Through this investment, NLM is continuing to build a well-trained, data-driven research workforce for the future.

Recipients of NLM’s Institutional Grants for Research Training in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (T15) will focus training programs in one or more of the following areas:

  • Health care/clinical informatics
  • Translational bioinformatics
  • Clinical research informatics
  • Public health informatics
  • Consumer health informatics
  • HIV informatics and data science (supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases).

This funding effort serves to develop, maintain, and renew scientific research capacity, a key goal in NIH’s Strategic Plan. NLM furthers this goal through funding training programs to inspire and empower a data-driven research workforce. Since first establishing a biomedical informatics training program in 1983, NLM has continuously advanced the biomedical and data science workforce; the current T15 program will support 110 biomedical informatics and data science predoctoral trainees, as well as around 60 postdoctoral trainees, per year. Each awarded institution will make special efforts to recruit individuals from underrepresented groups and economically, socially, culturally, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds into these research careers.
