MedlinePlus Connect Supports ICD-10-CM Requests

MedlinePlus Connect now supports ICD-10-CM  (International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, Clinical Modification) queries. Upon receiving a problem code request with an ICD-10-CM code, MedlinePlus Connect returns relevant health information from MedlinePlus, Genetics Home Reference, and other reliable health resources. Note that MedlinePlus Connect will continue to deliver targeted responses to ICD-9-CM and SNOMED CT requests.

ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM are classification systems used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures. Although the use of ICD-10 as a required standard in the US was recently delayed by Congress, the NLM is pleased to move forward with this enhancement of MedlinePlus Connect to support user needs.

MedlinePlus Connect is NLM's service for patient portals and electronic health record (EHR) systems.  MedlinePlus Connect makes it easy for EHRs to link to targeted information for patients from MedlinePlus, using their existing coding for diagnoses (problem codes), medications, and laboratory test results. Please see the MedlinePlus Connect documentation pages for information on using ICD-10-CM and other code systems with our Web application or Web service.  Also, you can see how MedlinePlus Connect responds to ICD-10-CM codes by using the Web application demo page and the Web service demonstration page.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest library of the health sciences and a component of the National Institutes of Health. The NLM collects, organizes, and makes available biomedical science information to scientists, health professionals, and the public.
