There are several types of administrative records that can to generate health statistics.

Vital Records record births, deaths, marriages and divorces. While primarily intended to register these events legally, these records collect important health related information. NCHS abstracts them to derive health statistics.

Provider Records are case histories that report on service provided. These records are abstracted to derive standard information used for health statistics.

Payer Records record payments made for services provided. Typically, these records contain coded information about the diagnoses and procedures relevant to an episode of care. Statistics describe.
  • Care provided,
  • The conditions diagnosed,
  • Length of episodes, and
  • Outcomes

Electronic Record systems facilitate use of each of the above sources of information.
