Transcript: Individual Theme Introduction
[Music playing and people singing.]
Native peoples believe that each person has a responsibility for his or her proper behavior and health. In most cases, traditional healers only agree to treat an individual when that person asks for help, and that person must make a full commitment to address the problems that are causing their illness.
These stories in this kiosk offer ideas about personal responsibility, family and tribal ties, role models, and identity.
Taken together, these concepts influence a Native person's approach to good health, and inform their decision whether to pursue western medicine or traditional healing practices when confronted with an illness.
