SciENcv: Getting Started

What is SciENcv?

Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) is an application that helps researchers assemble the professional achievements needed for participation in federally funded research.

Benefits:
  • Allows researchers to describe their scientific contributions in their own language
  • Reduces the administrative burden associated with federal grant submission and reporting requirements
  • Eliminates the need to repeatedly enter biographical and Current and Pending (Other) Support information
  • Leverages data from existing systems

What is NCBI and what does it have to do with SciENcv?

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The 1988 establishment of NCBI occured due to three independent but related actions.  Additional information can be found here.

The following timeline provides a brief history of the NLM/NCBI websites used in this workshop:

* 1997 - PubMed is introduced as a freely accessible biomedical and life sciences literature database of citation abstracts that includes links to other resources.

* 2005 - NCBI introduces the My NCBI tool, which retains user information and database preferences to provide customized services for many NCBI databases.

* 2010 - NCBI introduces the My Bibliography tool to to simplify the process for gathering one’s published articles and other materials. The tool, which is connected to NIH’s grants management system, also assists researchers in complying with the NIH Public Access Policy.

* 2013 - NCBI introduces the SciEncv tool to help researchers assemble, highlight, and describe their professional highlights needed for participation in federally funded research.

  2. If you already have an eRA Commons or NSF account, please use it to create your NCBI account.

Otherwise, you may use any of the icons listed or select "more options" which include most institutions.  All available 3rd party logins that you can use with your NCBI account are listed on the account page. You can search for ones that you may have already by typing the name in the filter box.

Remember icon Please log out of the eRA Commons prior to logging into NCBI when linking your account.

  2. Click your username which is located on the top right of the browser page.
  3. Select Account settings.
  4. Click Add account beneath Linked Accounts.
  5. Locate eRA Commons or NSF (National Science Foundation) Researcher Login and enter credentials.
  6. Follow the onscreen prompts.

Can I have someone else manage my account?

NCBI account holders can grant access to their My Bibliography and SciENcv tools to others as delegates. Delegates can then add, edit, or remove information, allowing for collaborative research efforts. Account holders have complete control over access by inviting and revolking delegate privileges at any time.

Diagram of what a delegate does

Send a delegation request:
    1. Log in to your NCBI account at https://account.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov or https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sciencv/.
    2. Click on your username in the top right corner.
    3. Select Account settings.
    4. Under the Delegates section, click Add delegate and enter the email address of your delegate.
