Mission of the National Library of Medicine Metadata Management Program
- Provides authoritative bibliographic and authority records required for the NLM collection, other NLM programs, and the U.S. Cataloging-in-Publication (CIP) Program
- Provides preliminary record creation and maintenance for NLM programs (GENBANK, NIHMS, PMC, LSTRC, Bookshelf, CIT Videocasts)
- Distributes machine-readable records in MARC and XML formats
- Provides metadata mapping and services for bibliographic and authority data
- Maintains the NLM Classification
- Manages the cataloging contracts
- Assists biomedical libraries by providing cataloging copy, training materials, and updates on cataloging policies, procedures and trends
- Participates in national and international bibliographic control programs and standards development
