向非典宣战! (Declaration of war on SARS!) Beijing Times, 2003

Produced in 2003, this poster is not typical of 21st century Chinese society. The image of the muscular health worker, fist in the air, dates back to the cultural revolution of the 1960s and “the power of the people.” While the depiction of the SARS virus is realistic, the animated SARS bugs in the poster have frowning faces, owing to their fear that a People’s War has been declared against them. In the middle is a poem on the prevention and control of SARS.
