Dr. Hardy’s work and expertise focus on using health informatics to improve public health and health care decision-making. Dr. Hardy has held positions as a researcher and academician and is active in national informatics organizations. She has written and edited books on informatics and health care. |

5:30 pm - 6:00 pm Dr. Brennan is the Director of the National Library of Medicine, where she oversees the world’s largest biomedical library. She has positioned the Library to be the hub for biomedical data science at NIH and across the globe. Dr. Brennan holds an appointment as associate investigator in the National Institute of Nursing Research Division of Intramural Research, where she directs the Advanced Visualization Laboratory. Before joining NIH, she was the Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom Professor in the School of Nursing and College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Brennan is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the American Academy of Nursing, the American College of Medical Informatics, and the New York Academy of Medicine. |

His research focuses on advancing machine learning methods in clinical data science to improve clinical prediction in internal medicine and critical care settings, with applications in opioid abuse, sepsis, and COVID-19. |

11:30 am – 12:00 pm Jian (Jan) Li, MD, PhD Dr. Jan Li is a Scientific Review Officer for Extramural Programs at the National Library of Medicine. Dr. Li performs and coordinates peer review for NLM extramural grant applications. |

1:00 pm - 1:30 pm Dr. Richard Palmer serves a dual role as Acting Director and Deputy Director of Extramural Programs at the National Library of Medicine, where he oversees NLM’s grant programs for research, resources, workforce development, and small business related to biomedical informatics and data science. He also carries out evaluation of the outcomes and impact of NLM's grant programs and coordinates collaborative extramural activities with other NIH Institutes and Centers. Before joining NLM, Dr. Palmer served as a Health Scientist Administrator in the Office of Extramural Research Administration at the NIH’s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). Dr. Palmer has more than 25 years of extramural research experience and has been an investigator on NIH- and CDC-funded research grants. Dr. Palmer received his MPH from San Diego State University, DrPH from the University of Texas Health Science Center, and holds a JD with specialization in healthcare and administrative law from Nova Southeastern University. |

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm Dr. Yanli Wang is currently a Program Director at the National Library of Medicine, Extramural Program Division. Dr. Wang manages a grant portfolio in the areas of bioinformatics, clinical informatics and data science research, scholarly work, and biomedical training. She serves as the Program Officer for the RADx-rad Data and Discoveries Coordination Center and co-chairs the NSF-NIH joint Smart and Connected Health program. Dr. Wang is trained in chemistry and computational biology. |

10:00 am – 10:30 am Dr. Kin Wah Fung is a Staff Scientist at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, National Library of Medicine, U.S. National Institutes of Health. He worked as a surgeon for 15 years before becoming a medical informatician. He has experience in implementing and managing clinical information systems in large-scale healthcare institutions. His current research interests include controlled medical terminologies and issues related to their use in the clinical environment. He received his medical training in Hong Kong and U.K. He earned his M.S. degree in Computer-based Information Systems from the University of Sunderland, U.K. He earned his M.A. degree in Medical Informatics from Columbia University, New York. |

12:30 pm - 1:00 pm As Acting Scientific Director of NLM’s Intramural Research Program (IRP), Dr. Florance will oversee a unified program that includes components housed in NLM’s Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications and the National Center for Biotechnology Information. NLM’s IRP conducts research and training in computational biology and computational health sciences and is distinctive in its focus on solving biological and clinical problems through computational approaches that can be generalized and applied across multiple types of data, disciplines, and health issues. Dr. Florance came to the NLM in 2001 and most recently served as Director of NLM’s Extramural Programs, where she was responsible for all of NLM’s research, resource, and training programs. She also served as program director for NLM’s university-based pre-and post-doctoral training programs in biomedical informatics and data science. Dr. Florance received her BA and MA degrees in medical anthropology from the University of Utah, a master’s degree in library science from Brigham Young University, and a PhD in information and library science from the University of Maryland. |
