DB / Metadata Management Program (MMP): Using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®) in Cataloging


Corporate Names

  • Exception
    • MeSH headings with the annotation "Coordinate with specific NAF entry if applicable" may be used by catalogers in addition to the specific NAF entry. The MeSH descriptor is coded as MARC 650, but the NAF heading is coded as MARC 610.

    • Example:

  • Generally, coordinate corporate names used as subjects with the appropriate MeSH descriptor for the type of corporate entity, or named group
    • Examples:
      • For a work on the history of the American Academy of Nursing assign
        • 610 22 $a American Academy of Nursing
        • 650 12 $a Societies, Nursing $x history
      • For a work about the National Institutes of Health assign
        • 610 22 $a National Institutes of Health (U.S.)
        • 650 12 $a United States Government Agencies
      • For a work about the Australian Red Cross Society assign
        • 610 22 $a Australian Red Cross Society
        • 650 12 $a Red Cross
      • For a work about NLM Visible Human Project assign
        • 610 22 $a Visible Human Project (National Library of Medicine (U.S.))
        • 650 12 $a Visible Human Projects
