The International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) is produced and owned by the International Council of Nurses (ICN).

Purpose
ICNP supports:

  • the meaningful comparison of nursing care
  • the identification of trends in provision
  • the appropriate allocation of nursing resources
  • the facilitation of nursing research
  • evidence-based policy making.

Description
ICNP describes different aspects of nursing practice in a uniform way, including observations and actions.

ICNP translations in several languages are produced with the cooperation of the National Nursing Association. For more information about ICNP translations, see the ICNP Web site.

Audience
ICNP is used by nurses, healthcare organizations, and other healthcare professionals.

ICNP is updated annually.
