Associate Fellowship Program: How to Apply

NLM has paused the Associate Fellowship Program.

The NLM Associate Fellowship Program is open to U.S. library and information science professionals, as well as graduate students completing their degrees. Up to five qualified Associate Fellows may be selected. The fellowship will be remote for 2025-2026.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Master's degree in an ALA-accredited library/information science program, earned by June of the year of appointment or within 5 years. Undergraduate degrees can be in any major.
  • United States citizenship.
  • Desirable, but not essential:
    • Work experience in a library or health sciences environment.
    • Demonstrated interest or experience in leadership.

Application Process and Timeline:

NLM staff review applications in March, invite 10 to 12 applicants to interview in April and May, and make offers to candidates by mid-May. The NLM Associate Fellowship Program year begins July 1 each year and ends June 30 the following year.

How We Recruit

We announce the opening of the Associate Fellowship Program applications on the job sites or listservs of all ALA-accedited library schools. We also share the announcement with the ALA Spectrum Scholars; post to the job site of the Association of Research Libraries, and with the ACRL Residency Interest Group. We also post to professional listservs including JESSE, MEDLIB-L, FEDLIB-L, and AAHSL. We ask the Network of the National Library of Medicine to share the announcement with Network members, email instructors of health sciences courses at iSchools and library schools and ask that alumni Associate Fellows as well as NLM staff share with their networks. We post to LinkedIn, X, and will present at online library school career fairs, or class presentations.
