In the early 20th century, the world’s leading historians of medicine worked at Johns Hopkins University, including, seated left and right respectively, physician, pathologist, and educator William Henry Welch (1850–1934) and prolific scholar and leading historian of medicine Henry E. Sigerist (1891–1957); and, standing left to right, medical historian and librarian of medicine Colonel Fielding H. Garrison (1870–1935), psychiatrist, medical historian, and author John Rathbone Oliver (1872–1943), and medical historian Owsei Temkin (1902–2002).
